New federal regulations effective January 22, 2006 mandate increases in compressor efficiency. These new regulations involve the Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio, or SEER. Pre-1992 central air conditioners may have SEER ratings of only 6 or 7. The national efficiency standard for central air conditioners in 2005 requires a minimum SEER of 10, but it will rose to SEER 13 for products manufactured after January 22, 2006.
